Products That I Love!

There are several products that I use everyday or products that I hope to own someday that I have researched, that I think bring value to gaming and movie watching.  I would like to share these products with you and maybe add some value to your experience.

Let's start with the monitor situation, but I have researched this product thoroughly.  Well, these products.  I haven't decided between the two of them.

This is the 34 inch monitor, with a super sexy curve, and this is the 29 inch monitor that is flat, but I don't discriminate.

LG 34" Curved Monitor

Both of them are monitors are that are great at two things.  Productivity and movie watching.  They are both 21:9 monitors, however one is larger and a higher resolution, and the other is smaller and lower resolution.  If you want to game and your computer is less than stellar than you should probably want to go with the smaller 29 inch 2560x1080 monitor.  It will be much easier to run games, helping you maintain a playable frame rate.  This resolution is really nice for productivity because  it allows you two almost square aspect ratios.  This is very useful if you're a student.  Let's say you're a student who is writing a research paper.  It allows you to have two windows that will show you plenty of information so that you can have your browser full of websites for research, as well as have your word document open to write your paper.  The 34 inch is at a resolution for 3440x1440.  This means that it has a much higher pixel per inch setting than the lower resolution monitor.  In layman's that means that you should be able to fit more content onto the screen.  In practice this plays out how you would expect it to.  Instead of two visible windows you can have three or four.  If you have a word document open you can easily see three full sized documents at once.  This is a great boon for productivity.  It is also incredibly useful for movie watching.  a 21:9 aspect ratio is incredibly close to the format that movies are shot in.  Even with a typical 16:9 1080p screen, there will be black bars on the top and bottom, because even though 16:9 is already wide screen, it isn't as wide as the format Hollywood uses for its movies.  21:9 nearly eliminates these black bars giving you a much more  cinematic and immersive experience.

Now that we have talked about your visual game, let's step up our audio game.  I have two recommendations in this guide.  One for when you're at home in a quiet environment, and another if you're on the go or working out.  Let's get started with the at home pair, shall we?  My indoor headphones are a pair of Phillips Fidellio X1's.  Although I would suggest a used pair of Fidellio X2's instead.

X2's Pictured

I know that buying a used pair of headphones might sound like a rather...gross prospect, but the X2's area significant improvement over the X1's and they are considerably cheaper used than a new pair of X1's.  You can replace the earpads on the X2's and wipe them down to make them like new.  The reason I am suggesting this line of headphones is that the are some of the best headphones I have ever used.  They are open back which gives you a really open sound stage, compared to a pair of closed back headphones.  It sounds like the music is surrounding you instead of the music playing right into your skills.  You get excellent instrument separation.  The drawback of open back is a lack of bass.  However, the X1's and X2's have really good bass.  It does this without sacrificing any quality in the mids or highs.  It's really impressive.  I love these headphones and I think you will too.  If you're a gamer, you can get an added benefit from these, which is its removable cable.  You can remove the cable and add a third party cable that has a microphone attached.  Boom! Now you have a really high end gaming headset.  The mic I use is this one.

Sennheiser IE 80's

The other pair of headphones I use is a pair of Sennheiser IE 80's.  They are a great pair of travel headphones.  They are robust and don't mind getting coiled up and shoved into a pocket.  They have a really great bass response.  Absolutely amazing, but unlike the Skullcandy's or Beats, which the bass on this rivals, I have tried before, they don't overpower mids or highs.  The mids are still crisp, and the high still sparkle.  Not only this, but they have a very impressive sound stage.  So much so that, when I was on a flight about a month ago, a police siren came on in a movie and I looked over my shoulder because it sounded like it was coming behind me.  I was on an airplane and I thought there was a police car behind me.  Am I an idiot?  Probably, but the headphones are still impressive.  One of the things that always bugs me about headphones is when the cable breaks.  It's always the cable that breaks, never the drivers.  You can remove the cable and replace them if the cable ever breaks on these.  For just 20 bucks you can keep your super nice headphones and use them like nothing happened. What's not to love?

This is a rather simple product recommendation, which is for the xbox 360 controller.  If you game on the pc, you can't go wrong with this thing.  It's plug and play.  No annoying set up required, no fuss.  Most games will come with a configuration pre-made that works.  You can get a cheap one used.  It's not a bad deal at all.

The last product isn't really related to gaming of movies, but it's the thing I do all my work on, which is the surface pro 3.  This this is a beast.  With the keyboard you have a portable workstation capable of doing anything you can really imagine, even some light gaming.  Without the keyboard you have a rather excellent tablet for YouTube, or Netflix.  If that's too pricey you can pick up the little brother to the surface which is the Surface 3.  It's significantly less powerful, but it can handle web browsing, document creation, media consumption, reading.  Both are capable of pen input, which is what I love.  I use the included pen to take notes in all of my classes.  It gives me the benefits of hand writing my notes, while getting the benefits of organizing it on a computer.   It's crazy light, you stand out in a sea of laptops and macbooks. Plus I think it's just cool.

There you have it, 5 items I think you guys would really like.  I hope this guide helps, and if not I hope it gave you some ideas for products you might use, and if not that either...well...Sorry for wasting your time.
